Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 103 (December 4, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William E. Newing (ASN: 0-536736), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division. On 9 October 1944, Lieutenant Newing was leading a rifle platoon of Company G against heavily defended enemy positions in the Bois du Haut des Trappes, west of Letricourt, France. The platoon encountered intense enemy machine gun and artillery fire and suffered many casualties. The forward artillery observer was killed and Lieutenant Newing, despite the fact that he was wounded, assumed the duties of the artillery observer and courageously continued to lead his platoon in the attack. He was again wounded as he fearlessly advanced at the head of his platoon, but refusing medical aid, even though he could not stand without assistance, he valiantly continued to lead his men until the objective was gained and preparations made against an enemy counterattack. Throughout the action, Lieutenant Newing moved from man to man, calmly encouraging them and inspiring them to greater efforts. His utter fearlessness and determined, heroic leadership exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States.
