The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward Martin Murray, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces at Munda, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 22 and 27 July 1943. On 22 July 1943, during the Munda Campaign, First Lieutenant Murray led a successful search for one of his officers who had been wounded while leading a patrol. When the advance of his Infantry company was stopped by increased enemy resistance on 27 July 1943, he crawled forward 30 yards beyond his own lines and directed machine gun fire which forced the Japanese to abandon their positions. His actions won him the deepest respect of his men and had noticeable effect on their battle conduct. First Lieutenant Murray’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
