Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 37 (November 16, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) William Claiborne Morrow (ASN: 0-258365), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at San Fratello, Sicily, on 7 August 1943. Major Morrow established an observation post in a very advanced position, and during the subsequent attack by his battalion, directed very effective mortar and artillery fire on the enemy. During a strong enemy counterattack, Major Morrow remained at his observation post directing fire until the last possible moment. As he was attempting to evacuate the position, he lost his life due to enemy automatic weapons fire. His courageous action and determination to accomplish his missions, with utter disregard for his own safety, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
