The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Roderic Glynn Morere, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 23 May 1944. Prior to the launching of an attack on strong enemy positions, First Lieutenant Morere placed his platoon of heavy machine guns and a section of .50 caliber machine guns into forward positions from which they could effectively support the advance of the rifle troops. Although enemy artillery and mortar fire fell at an increasing rate all along his platoon front, he moved from one section to the other directing the fire of his weapons and encouraging his men to maintain their close support of the attack. As the attack progressed he maintained constant observation of the attacking echelon and after displacing a section of guns directly behind riflemen, he remained in an open position under heavy fire to continue effective fire on the enemy and contributed materially to the success of the attack. His gallant leadership and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 75 (September 11, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Roderic Glynn Morere, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Pipirozzi, Italy, on 4 November 1943. On his first day of combat duty with a rifle platoon, First Lieutenant Morere led his men in capturing his initial objective near Rocca Pipirozzi, Italy. He then led his platoon across an open field in pursuit of the enemy. When heavy artillery and mortar fire dispersed his platoon, First Lieutenant Morere shouted to his men and encouraged them to follow him to a small knoll 300 yards away. A troop of enemy paratroopers, entrenched on the reverse slope, opened fire with machine guns. After crawling toward his objective, First Lieutenant Morere, with accurate rifle fire, killed or wounded about thirty of the enemy. A determined enemy attacked the platoon’s position seven times, but by courageously moving about the platoon and skillfully directing fire, First Lieutenant Morere helped his men repel each drive. Bullets penetrated his head and leg, but he crawled behind a rock and continued his accurate rifle fire and spirited leadership. Inspired by his heroic performance, his platoon held their ground and retained their objective. First Lieutenant Morere’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
