The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Stanley B. Moore, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 338th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Tremensouli, Italy, on 11 and 12 May 1944. Second Lieutenant Moore led his platoon through heavy mortar and artillery fire near Tremensouli. The group stopped in a draw after being pinned down by machine gun, machine pistol and rifle fire. Crawling the remaining distance, he threw grenades into an enemy pillbox from arm’s length, and when the five occupants came out he killed one with his bayonet and shot the other four when they tried to escape. The next day, after communications with battalion headquarters were temporarily cut off, Second Lieutenant Moore volunteered to cross 600 yards of open country under artillery and mortar fire, through mine fields and in view of the enemy. He made three such round trips. Second Lieutenant Moore’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
