(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Rumaldo Medina (ASN: 39847945), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces near Althornbach, Germany, on 19 March 1945. On that date, Private First Class Medina’s platoon fell under German machine-gun fire. Private First Class Medina armed himself with hand grenades and alone charged an enemy pillbox, a concrete gun emplacement. He was shot in the chest and knocked down, but he continued forward. Crawling through gunfire, he dropped two grenades through a vent in the pillbox. His action allowed his platoon to resume the attack, capture an enemy-held trench and kill three and capture twelve German soldiers. Private First Class Medina’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
