Headquarters, European Theater of Operations, U.S. Army, General Orders No. 83 (August 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) Harry L. Lewis (ASN: 0-10149), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces during the period from 7 June 1944 to 7 July 1944. On instance of particular note occurred on 9 June 1944, near Ste. Lmere-Englise, France, when Colonel Lewis inspired, by his heroic example, a steady flow of troops across a dangerous causeway which was under intense enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire. This relieved the congestion of men which would have resulted in a larger number of casualties than was sustained. Colonel Lewis crossed with the assault company and personally directed the attack on concentrated enemy positions. In spite of the heavy casualties, his actions infused fresh fighting spirit into the attacking force and caused them to close determinedly with the enemy, drive them from their ground, and insure the establishment of a bridgehead. Colonel Lewis’ heroism was an exemplification of the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
