During the Regimental attack on enemy objectives, Private First Class Laudato was called up with a rocket launcher to afford protection against some German tanks which attacked around noon. In addition to his bazooka, Private First Class Laudato also armed himself with a rifle and anti-tank grenade launcher. He occupied a position far to the front with troops of his company and a small group of paratroopers who had attached themselves to the 1st Battalion. Shortly thereafter, the Germans launched a fierce attack, spearheaded by tanks. A withdrawal became necessary, but Private First Class Laudato remained alone to face the oncoming tanks. The tanks concentrated their fire on him, but he calmly fac ed the oncoming tanks and struck home with the grenade launcher. One tank stopped, smoking, and later burst into flames. The remainder veered off and withdrew. When the action was over, alone, and despite serious wounds that resulted in amputation of one leg, Private First Class Laudato had defeated and put to flight five German tanks, destroying one of them. Private First Class Laudato’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
