(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Calvin Ersel Latham (ASN: 19013454), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment at Fort Mills, Corregidor, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), in action against enemy forces in the Philippine Islands, on 29 December 1941. Corporal Latham’s ambulance raced back and forth from the front lines to dressing stations despite heavy enemy fire. His ambulance was pocked by twenty-one machine gun bullets, one of the missiles tearing the pant leg of his uniform, but he stopped for nothing except for his wounded comrades. Corporal Latham’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
