(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Cyril Jean Baptiste Landry (ASN: 38657939), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Iegusugu Yama, Ryukyu Islands, on 20 April 1945. As his platoon came under continuous fire from the caves, the platoon leader was seriously wounded and five riflemen were killed. Private First Class Landry moved to find a better firing position and burned two caves, destroying three enemy firing posts. When the fuel in his flamethrower was exhausted, Private First Class Landry advanced toward his wounded platoon leader in an attempt to move him to safety. Before he could reach the officer, he was wounded in both legs by enemy machine gun fire. He was unable to move further, and the enemy threw hand grenades at him, which he caught and threw back, causing many casualties. Private First Class Landry’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 77th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
