The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Maurice Ruben Kyne (ASN: 39580462), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 23 February 1945. While his Division was spearheading the 9th Army drive, Sergeant Kyne discovered a group of entrenched enemy positions along a railroad embankment on the flank of his unit which was attacking an enemy town. Realizing that time and surprise were essential elements, he with two other soldiers refused to wait for reinforcements. Although subjected to intense enemy fire, the three men cleared more than 12 of the positions with grenades and rifle fire and captured 60 prisoners. After forcing the withdrawal of the enemy troops defending the outer edge of the town, they made contact with the advancing force, pointed out an avenue of approach, and rejoined their company. Staff Sergeant Kyne’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 84th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

    84th Infantry Division

    December 26, 1944

Headquarters, 84th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 14 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Maurice Ruben Kyne (ASN: 39580462), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Belgium on 26 December 1944. When an enemy armored column, consisting of four tanks and thirteen personnel carriers, approached his company’s command post, Staff Sergeant Kyne, acting on his own initiative, seized a rocket launcher, and running into the open, placed himself in full view of the enemy where he fired five rockets into the column, knocking out one vehicle and forcing the remainder to withdraw. Staff Sergeant Kyne’s daring feat, accomplished under constant enemy machine gun fire without aid or protecting fire, reflects the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
