The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant John H. Kunkel (ASN: 35047751), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 February 1945. When his unit was delayed in the advance through the city of Manila, by the firing of an enemy rifleman, Staff Sergeant Kunkel attempted a flanking movement designed to neutralize the opposition. Disregarding the possibility that the buildings, through which he must lay his courage, might contain enemy, he plunged ahead, and was killed by a round of point blank rifle fire. Staff Sergeant Kunkel’s courage and extreme devotion to duty throughout the campaign, culminating in a hero’s death, was a source of admiration and respect to all men of his unit. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Kunkel, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
