Kunert, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Bennwhir, France, on the night of 2 – 3 January 1945. Under incessant fire which had held up the advance of his company, Staff Sergeant Kunert crawled 400 yards up a now-covered hill, knocked out four enemy machine guns, killed two Germans, and captured 17 others. Staff Sergeant Kunert’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
