The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fourth Grade Herbert Brice Knox (ASN: 34602976), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 692d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 42d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 April 1945 near Herlheim, Germany. During an attack against strongly fortified enemy positions, the tank destroyer driven by Technician Fourth Grade Knox was hit twice and set ablaze by Panzerfaust fire which wounded the commander and another crew member. Technician Fourth Grade Knox killed the charging Panzerfaust team with his pistol and, manning a machine gun under intense enemy fire, killed six German infantrymen and wounded several others, breaking up the attack. He then extinguished the fire in the destroyer, administered first aid to his wounded comrades and directed fire from his 90-mm. gun, destroying several fortified enemy positions and killing and wounding a large number of Germans. His courageous action and intrepidity under fire reflect credit upon himself and the armed forces.
