Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 70 (July 29, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Nicholas G. Katsificas (ASN: 0-448789), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, in action against enemy forces in Belgium, on 19 December 1944. Acting as an artillery liaison officer for the company to which he was attached, Lieutenant Katsificas voluntarily assumed command of a fallen officer’s platoon which was pinned down by enemy fire. Upon reaching a fire break, he noticed a platoon of enemy on the other side. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Katsafanas braved the enemy fire and assaulted the enemy position single-handed. In this action he wounded six of the enemy with his pistol during his advance. First Lieutenant Katsafanas’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
