The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Third Grade Herbert J. Joys (ASN: 36044085), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Belgium, on 5 September 1944. When the lives of 30 casualties in his battalion aid station were threatened by a strong German attack, Sergeant Joys valorously led both medical personnel and patients over a hazardous route to evacuate them. Although devastating artillery, mortar and machine gun fire was directed at a river, he plunged into the water and swam 100 yards to obtain a boat on the opposite bank. He returned with the craft and helped load the wounded men and again crossed the river. The personal bravery, fearless courage and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Joys saved the lives of the 30 men and exemplifies the highest traditions of the armed forces.
