The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert F. Jones (ASN: 39161180), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 776th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 1st Armored Division. During the period ** to ** March 1943, while engaged with enemy forces, his vehicles became separated from the remainder of his platoon, which was temporarily out of action. Sergeant Jones volunteered to assist Company *, *** Armored Regiment in combating enemy tanks and anti-tank guns. He continuously and deliberately disregarded his own welfare in making personal reconnaissance while under heavy enemy fire in order to direct the positioning of his vehicles. He destroyed six enemy tanks and one 88-mm. gun. On 27 March 1943, Sergeant Jones was killed while in action against three enemy tanks. The aggressive and fearless leadership, constant devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Jones reflect the finest traditions of the Armed Forces and are deserving of the highest praise.
