The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private James W. Jones, Sr. (ASN: 33843309), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Longsdorf, Luxembourg, on 16 December 1944. When his platoon was halted and pinned down by fire from a hostile machine gun to its front, Private Jones made his way through withering fire toward the enemy emplacement. When he was 75 yards from the machine gun, the enemy turned the full power of the weapon upon hm. Undeterred, he continued forward until he was 30 yards away. Throwing two grenades into the emplacement, he rushed forward with his rifle, killing the crew and silencing the weapon. As he turned to signal his platoon forward, he was struck and killed by fire from a second enemy machine gun. By his unflinching valor and superb courage, Private Jones inspired his platoon to advance and capture its objective. Private Jones’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
