(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Hyrum Duane Jones (ASN: 39679109), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 163d Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Walkde Island, Dutch New Guinea, on 18 May 1944. Staff Sergeant Jones attacked a machinegun revetment of the enemy with rifle and grenades, killing all 17 Japanese occupants. He was killed by machinegun fire while returning to his squad. Staff Sergeant Jones’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 41st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
