Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 32 (July 12, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles H. Jones (ASN: 0-1292702), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a battalion intelligence officer with Headquarters, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 10 June 1944. Lieutenant Jones volunteered to lead a patrol into a small village to seek out and destroy an anti-tank gun and a machine gun. Securing a tank for support, he led the patrol into the village. As his patrol entered the edge of the village it was suddenly pinned down by enemy small arms and machine gun fire. Locating the position of the enemy guns, despite the intense enemy fire and with complete disregard for his own safety, he moved out in front of the patrol to direct the fire of the tank. While directing the fire of the tank upon the enemy position, he was killed, The extraordinary heroism, complete devotion to duty and gallant leadership he displayed reflect great credit upon himself and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
