    Headquarters, U.S. Forces-Pacific, General Orders No. 72 (July 27, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Frederick John Jezyk (ASN: 31088491), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces north of Tambuco, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 19 December 1944. Sergeant Jezyk repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to locate the enemy and direct his squad’s fire on them. He led the way across a wide, muddy ditch, tossing grenades to good effect. Once across, he led a group of his men into a new position between the missile and his men. His swift actions caused him severe wounds, but saved his squad from injury. Undeterred by his serious wounds, Sergeant Jezyk then calmly directed his squad in a withdrawal and was the last man to leave the advanced position, carried by two of his scouts. Sergeant Jezyk’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 77th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
