The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George Edward Jenkins (ASN: 0-1300649), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in in France, on 22 June 1944. First Lieutenant Jenkins, a platoon leader in an Infantry company, led the assault squad of his assaulting platoon on an enemy strongpoint, known to have at least three machine guns and one 47-mm. gun, and known to be well-fortified by wire entanglements and emplacements. Following dangerously close to a supporting mortar barrage on the concentration, First Lieutenant Jenkins ordered fixed bayonets and personally led his men directly in the face of withering fire of all weapons. By his cool, fearless leadership and employment of all platoon weapons, he successfully routed the enemy which had halted the advance of the battalion. After driving the enemy from their position, he reorganized immediately and kept his men under perfect control. His courage and leadership under fire inspired and encouraged his men to their utmost, resulting in a continual advance with a minimum of casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 95 (December 11, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George Edward Jenkins (ASN: 0-1300649), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 9 and 10 August 1944. While making a personal reconnaissance of a route of advance for his company, Captain Jenkins was fired upon by a German manning a machine pistol less than 15 feet in front of him. With great audacity he immediately returned the fire with his pistol, successfully killing the gunner and seriously wounding his companion. On the following day, during an attempted enemy counter-thrust, he observed two enemy tanks with approximately twenty Infantrymen riding upon them endeavoring to flank his company. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Jenkins, although exposed to enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire, engaged the enemy personally, and brilliantly directed the fire of his heavy weapons upon the group, forcing them to withdraw. Severely wounded during the day’s engagements, he refused evacuation until he had personally consolidated his company’s position. Captain Jenkins’ outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
