The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Floyd M. Jenkins, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Staff Sergeant Jenkins landed with the first assault wave on the coast of France under intense enemy fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, he fearlessly dismounted from his tank and led the tanks of his platoon through the obstacles on the beach and through a mine field. When his platoon leader was killed in action Sergeant Jenkins immediately assumed command and courageously led an assault against the enemy. Staff Sergeant Jenkins’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
