The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal [then Private] Dale Wayne Jeanneret (ASN: 37143511), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Gunner with Company B, 34th Tank Battalion, 5th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 8 August 1944 near Chaignes, France. Corporal Jeanneret’s platoon was setting up an outpost, on Highway 13, when seven Mark V enemy tanks approached. The gun in the tank in which Corporal Jeanneret rode, developed a jam, so he attacked the enemy with only a machine gun. When his ammunition was expended, he repaired the tank gun and fired upon the enemy, disabling three tanks and causing the other four to withdraw. Corporal Jeanneret, on foot, then proceeded to retrieve his abandoned machine gun, but was soon overtaken by an enemy staff car with two occupants. He fired upon the car with his second machine gun and put it out of action, killing one of the occupants.
