Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 82 (May 20, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Milton John Jarrold, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Lagone, Italy, on 19 December 1943. Captain Jarrold led a patrol to find a route of advance for his battalion. Learning that a German machine gun was emplaced beside a road ahead of him, he halted his patrol and went with another officer to study the terrain. Observing five Germans approaching, he and the other officer attacked the group, killing two, wounding a third, and dispersing the others. Returning toward the patrol, he discovered a strong enemy outpost. Approaching from the rear, he and the other officer killed three Germans and routed about ten others. The remainder of the patrol, hearing the shots, arrived on the scene and the entire outpost was liquidated. Interrogation of prisoners revealed that the outpost had been placed to ambush the battalion as its advanced. Captain Jarrold’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
