The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Harold George Howey (ASN: 6858141), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Sicily, on 10 July 1943. While in command of a landing party attacking an enemy-held beach, Sergeant Howey found himself confronted by a high cliff, well-fortified and strongly entrenched by the enemy, who immediately began throwing hand grenades into his party. During this action, Sergeant Howey was severely wounded, but, despite his wounds he continued to lead his boat team and fought his way to the top of the cliff through furious machinegun fire from five pillboxes, 30 yards distant. Exposing himself to enemy fire, Sergeant Howey personally knocked out one pillbox with grenades and then, disregarding his severe pain, he led his group through continuous enemy fire for a period of two hours. Only after his men had returned to company control did he allow himself to be evacuated, approximately five hours after he had been wounded. Staff Sergeant Howey’s bravery under fire and outstanding leadership exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
