The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Glen W. Harman (ASN: 0-1169113), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 71st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 23 April 1945. On that date, during a lone reconnaissance in Gutenberg, Germany, Lieutenant Harman fearlessly approached an enemy machine gun, killed the gunner and silenced the hostile weapon. When subjected to sniper fire from a nearby house he courageously braved the enemy fire, kicked open the door and fired his weapon into the house until he was fired upon by a second enemy machine gun. Finding his ammunition nearly expended, he ran to his jeep, which he had left outside the town, manned the machine gun and aggressively returned the enemy fire, forcing the surrender of a German officer and seven enlisted men. First Lieutenant Harman’s intrepid gallantry and indomitable fighting spirit is in keeping with he highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
