Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 24 (March 26, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Third Grade Marlyn James Hall (ASN: 36810871), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 422d Infantry Regiment, 106th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Belgium, on 19 December 1944. When his platoon had been completely pinned down in an open field by concentrated enemy artillery and machine gun fire from all sides, which inflicted severe casualties, Technician Third Grade Hall with utter disregard for his personal safety, fearlessly exposed himself in order to render aid to his wounded comrades. Although remnants of his platoon succeeded in escaping to cover, Technician Third Grade Hall chose to remain behind and continue his efforts which resulted in comforting and saving the lives of several men. Technician Third Grade Hall was captured in this action and worked in an American hospital which had been overrun by the enemy. When he was removed to a prison stockade, his attention was instrumental in saving the lives of sick and wounded prisoners. Technician Third Grade Hall’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 106th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
