    Headquarters, U.S. Forces-Pacific, General Orders No. 162 (September 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Raymond W. Griggs, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company A, 1st Battalion, 169th Infantry Regiment, 43d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Manaoag, Pangasinan, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 January 1945. Leading his company in an attack on an enemy strongpoint, Captain Griggs, although wounded by shell fragments, continued to drive ahead, engaging the enemy in hand-to-hand combat, and forcing those still alive to flee. Then, before his men could consolidate their new position, the enemy counterattacked with mounting fury. Captain Griggs moved to the imperiled sector and rallied his men in repelling the violent attack, assisting the repulse by accurately hurling grenades sent up to him from the rea r. However, a 75-mm. gun emplacement remained in a cave and grenades could not reduce the position. Captain Griggs crawled forward in the face of the enemy fire to within 20 feet of the mouth of the cave. There, delivering accurate fire into the slit, he enabled a flame thrower and a bazooka to approach the cave and destroy the emplacement. During the bitter engagement in which he accounted or six of the sixty enemy killed, and numerous weapons and large quantities of ammunition were captured. Through his aggressive battlefield leadership and eagerness to engage with the enemy and destroy him, Captain Griggs played a most important part in the capture of a vital enemy stronghold. Captain Griggs’ outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 43d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
