The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Edward Joseph Guokas (ASN: 36016838), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 3d Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, Philippine Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Abucay Hacienda, Philippine Islands, on 22 January 1942. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Guokas went to the aid of a wounded companion. Although the route to the position where the wounded man lay was over level terrain which provided little cover, and despite heavy small arms fire sweeping the area from snipers and from enemy lines which were only 75 feet away, this intrepid soldier, with one companion, proceeded without hesitation to the exposed position in an attempt to evacuate the casualty. Private Guokas’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
