Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 297 (October 16, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Quincy Gillian (ASN: 18059806), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Service Company, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 28 July 1943, at New Georgia, Solomon Islands. Private Gillian was performing his regular duties as a ration section man at a forward ration dump when enemy detachments surrounded the ration dump, killing and wounding several of the garrison. Voluntarily arming himself with a Browning Automatic Rifle he advanced towards the enemy machine gun that was firing effectively from a high ridge down into the dump. Despite the intense, accurate fire of the enemy Private Gillian aggressively went forward, opened fire with his automatic weapon, and continued doing so until killed by the enemy. As a result of his great personal courage under fire, at the sacrifice of his life, Private Gillian contributed indispensably to the successful defense of the ration dump pending the arrival of reinforcements. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
