Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 66 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Rufus Napoleon Garrett (ASN: 0-339882), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as S-2 with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Etienville, France, on 11 June 1944. Seizing an opportunity to advance our forces, First Lieutenant Garrett took command of a group of riflemen and, in disregard of his own safety, led them forward under intensive enemy machine gun fire. He and his group succeeded in capturing several of the enemy. While so engaged, he was killed by enemy mortar fire. First Lieutenant Garrett’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
