Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 278 (October 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Technician Fourth Grade John L. Farrell (ASN: 33429614), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 19 November 1944. On that date, near Dordal Farms, France, Technician Fourth Grade Farrell fearlessly went to the aid of an officer who had been seriously wounded by automatic weapons fire from a concealed hostile position. In the face of this fire, Technician Fourth Grade Farrell calmly remained at the wounded officer’s side administering fires aid until he was himself wounded in the shoulder by an enemy grenade. When he returned with the officer to his company’s position, he refused medical attention in order to continue his unselfish ministrations, even as the sharp, close-range action increased around him. Technician Fourth Grade Farrell’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
