The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert D. Farmer (ASN: 37279649), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany on 18 November 1944. Although severely wounded during an enemy attack, Staff Sergeant Farmer drove the foe back from his position with his rifle fire, and crawled to a machine gun emplacement. Opening fire, he forced the enemy to disperse and seek cover. When his ammunition was exhausted, he crawled through heavy hostile fire to a second machine gun. Despite artillery and mortar fire falling upon his position, he held his ground in the face of a second enemy assault and poured withering fire into the hostile ranks. His machine gun ammunition expended, he once more fired his rifle until his position was overrun and he, himself, was killed by enemy fire. The personal bravery and courage displayed by Staff Sergeant Farmer reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
