(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) DeWitt C. Fair, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 70th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Group (Separate), attached to the 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 10 June 1944. Lieutenant Fair led his tank unit through formidable enemy opposition and persisted in the attack until the sixth effort to enter a French town was successful. Although enemy fire was raining on his tank, he repeatedly exposed himself to direct the attack. His tank was hit twice at point-blank range by anti-tank fire and ten times with grenades, but continued the charge, knocking out three anti-tank guns, several machine gun posts, and causing the surrender of numerous enemy soldiers. When the tank battle was finished, although Lieutenant Fair was wounded for the third time in two days, he braved enemy fire again to rescue two wounded comrades. First Lieutenant Fair’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
