(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Fred Noel Coleman (ASN: 34500529), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 236th Engineer Combat Battalion, attached to the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional) (Merrill’s Marauders), in action against enemy forces near Myitkyina, Burma, on 15 June 1944. When an enemy grenade landed near his foxhole, Sergeant Coleman heroically sacrificed his own life by throwing his own body over it, taking the full force of the explosion and saving the lives of his comrades. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
