Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 247 (October 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John R. Reeb (ASN: 35331026), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 November 1944 in France. During a fierce and heavily contested attack near Nomeny, France, while Staff Sergeant Reeb was serving as squad leader in an assaulting rifle company, all of his officers became casualties. Staff Sergeant Reeb quickly assumed command of the disorganized elements of his unit and inspired his men to courageously continue the advance, seize the objective, and capture more than one hundred of the enemy. The initiative and valor displayed by Staff Sergeant Reeb were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
