The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Elmer A. Koch (ASN: 37589004), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. During an attack on Niederfeulen, Luxembourg, Sergeant Koch voluntarily exposed himself to a concentration of enemy rifle and mortar fire in making his way to rescue three seriously wounded comrades. In attempting to rescue a fourth soldier, Sergeant Koch was hit in the leg and had to be evacuated. His bravery and his devotion to fellow soldiers in the face of danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
