The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Jack W. Wheeler (ASN: 0-1826182), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 15 March 1945 in Germany. On that date, the tank destroyer platoon commanded by Lieutenant Wheeler supported infantry troops in an attack on Waldoholzbach, Germany. Firmly entrenched enemy troops delayed the attack by fire from artillery self-propelled guns and small arms. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Lieutenant Wheeler courageously advanced on a reconnaissance, found firing positions, and, after putting his destroyers into place, manned an observation post to direct their fire. Although mortally wounded his excellent preparations and planning enabled his men to neutralize the enemy fire and aid the attack. Lieutenant Wheeler’s courage, leadership, and supreme devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
