The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class George Frederick White (ASN: 36409946), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 November 1944 in France. During an attack on St. Avold, France, on 25 November 1944, the attacking rifle company was subjected to intense enemy fire. Private First Class White, a rifleman, assumed command of his squad when the leader became a casualty and led his squad to capture its objective. While organizing the defense of the newly won position, Private First Class White was painfully wounded by enemy fire, but refused to be evacuated until all his men were in position. His courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
