The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul E. Cassell (ASN: 0-1310979), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 28 March 1945 in Germany. During the course of the assault on Rambach, Germany, on 28 March 1945, Lieutenant Cassell, commanding the leading company in a battalion advance, was fired on by three enemy machine guns. Halting the battalion, he deployed his company and alone continued toward the enemy position in an attempt to draw their fire. All of the enemy guns fired at him revealing their positions, which were soon destroyed by the combined fire power of the lead company, and the battalion advanced against Rambach. Lieutenant Cassell’s courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
