Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 116 (May 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Jack E. Barr (ASN: 332822562), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 September 1944 in France. On that date, during the difficult crossing of the Moselle River, the infantry company in which Technical Sergeant Barr served as platoon sergeant was delayed by severe enemy mortar and artillery fire falling in the exposed level terrain between the river and adjacent canal. Observing that one of his men had been wounded and lay exposed to the enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Barr left a covered position and, after crawling to the injured man, carried him on his shoulders to a place of safety despite the intense fire directed at them. Technical Sergeant Barr’s courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
