Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 115 (April 30, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George F. McGrath (ASN: 0-1301852), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 6 to 10 February 1945 in Germany. During the difficult crossing of the Our River near Wallendorf, Germany, and the assault into the Siegfried Line from 6 to 10 February 1945, Lieutenant McGrath, commanding an infantry company, so capably led his men that his company suffered few casualties. Despite intense enemy artillery concentrations, Lieutenant McGrath inspired his men by leading each attack with little regard for his own personal safety until wounded and evacuated. His courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
