The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Cyrus C. Addams, Jr. (ASN: 0-1296790), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 February 1945 in Germany. On that date, during the assault on the Siegfried Line near Wallendorf, Germany, Captain Addams, S-3 of an infantry battalion, aided the battalion commander in formulating plans for a last minute change in operations. In order that the attack would be successful, he led the assaulting companies across the open terrain, through heavy mortar and artillery fire, and by his utter disregard for personal safety, and through knowledge of the situation, inspired the officers and enlisted men to successfully carry out the plan of attack. Captain Addams’ courage, aggressiveness, inspiring leadership, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
