Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 78 (March 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Clifford D. Sherrill (ASN: 38203657), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, the enemy launched a fierce tank attack against Dahl, Luxembourg, which through the weight of superior numbers, drove to within fifty yards of Staff Sergeant Sherrill’s light machine gun position. Disregarding the disparity of fire power, Staff Sergeant Sherrill opened fire on the tank causing its crew to close the hatches. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he rant o a tank destroyer and effectively directed fire on the enemy tank, destroying it. Staff Sergeant Sherrill’s courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
