The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Mitchell Enice (ASN: 0-1822256), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 and 8 January 1945. During the early morning and complete darkness on 7 and 8 January 1945, the enemy launched coordinated tank and infantry attacks against Lieutenant Enich’s Tank Destroyer Platoon in the vicinity of Dahl, Luxembourg. Because he could not see, on both occasions, he quickly organized a system by which an adjacent mortar platoon could illuminate his target. By crawling toward the enemy under intense hostile fire, he directed fire of mortar flares, tank destroyers, and supporting artillery so effectively that several enemy tanks were destroyed and an un-estimated number of enemy troops killed. His heroic action, initiative, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
