Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 104 (April 16, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Lynn F. Strait (ASN: 12002113), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 22 February 1945 in Germany. On that date, Staff Sergeant Strait, accompanied by another soldier, was acting as a guide for his attacking company near Huttingen, Germany, when it was subjected to intense fire from an enemy position three hundred yards distant on the right flank. Fearlessly he crawled to a point seventy-five yards from the enemy position where he jumped to his feet and charged, firing his rifle. Part way to the enemy position he fell to the ground and threw hand grenades, killing several of the enemy and forcing twenty-two soldiers and an officer to surrender. His aggressiveness, bravery, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
