The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Eugene Jones (ASN: 35355796), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 22 February 1945 in Germany. On that date, during an attack against Birendorf, Germany, the tank destroyer in which Corporal Jones was gunner became mired in the soft mud. Realizing the necessity of neutralizing the tank and anti-tank fire directed at his position, Corporal Jones and a companion elected to remain at their weapons and effectively fired on an approaching enemy tank. When Corporal Jones raised the turret for better visibility another hostile tank opened fire, mortally wounding him. Corporal Jones’ courage, bravery, and supreme devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
