(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Staff Sergeant Jason Smith, United States Army, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving as a Special Forces Medic of the 3d Special Forces Group, on 14 November 2005, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in Afghanistan. On that date, Staff Sergeant Smith observed an explosion along his detachment’s route of travel after an ISAF vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Kabul, Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant smith calmly rendered aid to the first wounded soldier who had suffered significant wounds to his lower extremities. He stopped the bleeding, stabilized the soldier, and instructed another team member about what further treatment was necessary before continuing his sweep of the IED site. Informed of another soldier who was severely wounded, he sprinted about 200 meters of the injured man who was suffering from a life-threatening amputation of one of his legs. Staff Sergeant Smith applied a tourniquet and treated his other wounds before turning his care over to another team member to complete his sweep of the area.
