(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Private First Class Steve Michael Egoavil, United States Army, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Headquarters, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, on 3 March 2007 while serving in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. On that date, a bomb-laden vehicle stopped outside a Mess Hall at Sabari, a forward operating base in the Khost province of southeastern Afghanistan. In the ensuing explosion several soldiers were injured, and one man was buried beneath a pile of rubble. Private First Class Egoavil, finding the man could not be easily extricated from the small hole in the rubble, removed his combat gear and wriggled through the small opening to reach the trapped man, pivoting him so that rescuers could pull him to safety.
